What is Palliative Care?
Palliative Care is not just end-of-life care, although one key aim of Palliative Care is to manage that phase of the disease journey with excellent symptom control, comfort and dignity. Many people live for years benefitting from the involvement of Palliative Care and we aim to optimise your quality of life and to remove the fear and concern around Palliative Care referral.
Palliative Care Associates can ensure that patients benefit from excellent symptom control and medication management and can provide care across the disease spectrum.
Palliative Care is appropriate for anybody living with advanced illness including patients with heart failure, severe lung disease and dementia. Although cancer patients are the group that people often think of when the term ‘Palliative Care’ is mentioned anyone living with far-advanced and incurable disease can benefit from the symptom-focussed care that Palliative Care Associates specialises in. We consider your needs – physical, emotional and spiritual- and seek to ensure that those needs are addressed.
Why Choose Us?
At Palliative Care Associates we do not have restrictions on who we care for based on age, life expectancy or disease. We are able to provide expert care to anybody who has a diagnosis of a severe, life-limiting disease and welcome referrals from General Practitioners, Medical Specialists, Nursing colleagues and from patients and families. Patients are able to be thoroughly reviewed in a clinic environment and admission can be organised to Lake Macquarie Private Hospital or Warners Bay Private Hospital. If the patient and consultant prefer, we are also able to provide consultation for patients admitted under other specialties at both of these hospitals.
We know that the patient journey is complex, and we aim to provide flexible, responsive care at every stage. As part of this commitment we are happy to provide care for patients who are continuing life-prolonging treatments such as chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiotherapy and aggressive medical management of organ failure. This approach is in contrast to some other Palliative Care providers, but we believe that quality-of-life focussed care is appropriate at all stages of an individual’s unique disease journey.
Self-referral by patients and their family, friends or carer is welcomed by Palliative Care Associates and you do not need a doctor’s referral to be reviewed in clinic. We believe that the accessibility of best-practice, responsive and compassionate private Palliative Care is an important service for the people of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley.
